This energetic group was eager for the adventure and had a great time outside. The frigid temperatures during December forced many adventures to be postponed. With warmer temperatures on Thursday, Mrs. Campbell's 1st grade enjoyed a mini adventure snowshoeing around the elementary school grounds.

Subject- Hoax “Swatting” in Spokane Public Schools Republic Families, Community, and Staff, I want to share a quick note regarding the recent false reporting of an incident at three Spokane Public School District high schools, around Washington State, and the country. These false reports are referred to as “swatting.” Swatting, by definition, is the action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address. These situations are taken seriously and emergency protocols will place schools into a "Lockdown" until the situation is resolved and cleared. Any time this happens, which includes this type of a prank, it causes undue stress to staff, students, and families throughout those areas. The Republic School district practices safety drills throughout the year to ensure staff and students know and understand the safety protocols. Below is a link to a media report concerning those false reporting situations: https://www.krem.com/article/news/local/police-spokane-lewis-and-clark-high-school-north-central-high-school-placed-on-lockdown-due-to-hoax/293-16d99903-c97c-43e3-bf38-22058d643568 Again, this did NOT occur in the Republic School District, but we wanted to alert you of the situation and assure you that we remain diligent in keeping our students and staff safe. This is a good opportunity to talk with your students about school safety protocols and the importance of sharing any information with school officials in the event of a safety concern. Please remember to follow all school communication for directions and information during any and all safety events. John Farley Republic School District Superintendent

Winter weather information: With the perfect combination of extreme cold and snow on the way, now is the perfect time to review our safe school operating procedures and delay/closure options. Republic Schools will REMAIN OPEN if safe to do so. Extreme weather and snowfall could have an adverse effect on roads and bussing, heating classrooms, water pipes, utilities/power, and staffing. We will exhaust all options at our disposal to ensure we can serve our students every day and will do our best to make announcements in a timely manner (early morning) when and if a closure, delay, or bus route cancellation is needed. Please be aware of the following options: ***School Closure - All schools, offices, and activities/clubs/sports canceled for the day. ***2 Hour Late Start - Schools and bus routes start 2 hours late (example…7:10 AM bus route is now 9:10 AM and school starts at 10:00 AM instead of 8:00 AM). PM bus routes remain unchanged. This gives us time to prepare/heat up classrooms, clear roads, and plow. ***Early Release - Schools are dismissed early and an all call will go out to families. This is usually due to power failure or lack of heating, etc…buses will still run. ***Bus Route/s Cancellation - Specific bus or buses are canceled (parents may transport or excuse their students for the day). Schools will still operate as scheduled. Please check the Republic School District website, Facebook page, and email/text/all call for any school/district operating or inclement weather announcements.

I would like to update the community that our roof work has been completed on the middle and high school buildings. There was also an air quality test given at the high school from the DOH and our Educational Service District. The results were reported as follows: "Sample data and analysis of particulate/ambient respirable irritants do not indicate a casual factor for the family of concern. Mold types found within the school are natural to the outdoor environment, with a reduction in irritant quantities by the building air handlers. Physical inspection and interpretation of the sample data suggests Republic High School to be safe for instruction and regular physical activities." This is great news and thanks to our legislators, we are still on schedule for middle/high school HVAC and plumbing upgrades heading into next summer.

Breakfast After the Bell The State of Washington has changed the way we serve breakfast this year. We will be serving breakfast to K-6 grade students at 8:00 AM when they come in from the morning recess. Students will eat this breakfast in the classroom. 7-12 grade students will receive breakfast at 8:50, in their respective areas and will have a designated area to eat. Those parents that drop their students off to school will not have to drop them off early for breakfast at school. As long as they are here by 7:50, they will be on-time for school and will recieve breakfast when the official school day begins. If you have questions about this, please feel free to contact the school.
Republic School District Cell Phone Practice: While we concede that smart phones offer learning opportunities, we are one-to-one with Chromebooks in the 7-12 grades. Students will not need their smart phones with them during class time. We have purchased combination locks for lockers in the school and JR High and HS Students can rest assured that their phones will be perfectly safe, locked in their lockers. Cell phone use during class is largely away from academics and leads to distractions, and a possible drop in performance. This year all students will be expected to leave their phones locked in their lockers during class time. This will help eliminate opportunities for students to take their phones with them when they leave the classroom during class time. We fully understand that sometimes students are simply using phones during that time to covertly meet up with friends, ultimately leading to a distraction from learning. Students will be able to utilize their phones during a mid-morning breakfast at 8:50 and at their lunchtime. We ask that you speak to your student prior to the first day of school to support our efforts with this “Zero Distraction” learning policy. Students who fail to comply with the policy will face disciplinary consequences consistent with expectations found in our Student Handbook. Students in the elementary, grades K-6 are not allowed to have cellular devices out during the school day. Although they may have them in their backpack at school, they are expected to be turned off and in their bag.

As you know, with winter conditions sometimes our buses will run a few minutes late and we will do our best to notify families on those bus routes. Parents always have the option to keep their students at home if they feel that is the best choice on severe weather days. Please call the school office and the student will be excused for the day.
FYI regarding Covid quarantine timelines: On Monday, 12/27, CDC announced in a press release that they are updating their guidance on isolation and quarantine times for the general public. DOH similarly followed to adopt CDC’s guidance for the general public on 12/28. However, the Department of Health has not changed the guidelines for schools (or other congregant settings) at this time. The school district continues to have to follow state health guidelines in which the minimum quarantine period is 7 days (with a negative test). Dear Parents and Guardians, As Republic School District begins our 2021–22 school year, our Food Service Program is facing unprecedented supply chain issues. As a result, we may alter our posted menus with little to no notice. These changes are due to limited product availability, nation-wide transportation challenges, and supplier labor shortages. We are working closely with our distributors and manufacturers to secure food and supply items needed to support our program. While we plan to serve posted menu items each day, continued supply issues may not make this possible. We will attempt to substitute the scheduled menu with similar items to the extent we are able to do so. Please know that all students will continue to be offered meals that meet menu requirements, nutrition standards, and student acceptability. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these challenging times. School and bus routes will continue as normal today. We plan to remain open despite the power shortage. Parents can come pick-up their students or call to release them at 775-3712, as well. Today’s after-school program is cancelled.
Republic School District lost power around 9:25am. We are still determining the estimated length of the outage. Lunch is being served, the building is warm, and school will continue at this time. As we know more, we will keep families updated.
Republic Families, As you may have heard, the Governor has allowed schools to reduce physical distancing of students in class from 6ft. to 3ft. We are very excited about this change. Many students who have been working remotely all year will now be able to return to in-person instruction. We are meeting today and early next week to help ensure we have a clear process for students returning that works for families, transportation, teachers, and other school staff. Our goal is to have all students who wish to return to in person learning start after spring break. We possibly can accommodate some students (who have been on a waiting list) even sooner. I would like to encourage any families/students who have been successful with online learning to remain in that model for the rest of the school year. IF this is working for your family, I think it would be prudent to keep it going through the end of the school year. For some students, remote learning hasn’t been a positive experience. We are excited to have those students return as soon as we can make it work. I would like to remind everyone that masks are still required. This will be especially important as the physical distancing amongst students is reduced. If your son or daughter can’t (or won’t) wear a mask, the teacher will likely need to call you to come and get them. They will be able to return the following day if they will wear their mask. This is not a school district rule, as a public school we do not have any choice in this. If you have a child who would like to return to in person learning, please call either the elementary office (K-6) or the high school office (7-12) to give them your information. Please be patient as we work through this. At this moment, it is highly likely we don’t have all of the answers to questions you may have. We will continue to communicate as we know more details. Thank you! Kevin Young Superintendent

The Republic School District has mailed out a survey about the potential of moving to a 4 day school week for students. This is simply a way to gather information and hear from school district patrons to see if this is something worth exploring. Along with the survey, we will be scheduling multiple community forums for people to come share their thoughts in person. Please understand that at this time, there have been no decisions made on the feasibility of moving to a 4 day week. We are trying to collect information from every stakeholder in the community to decide if we should investigate further. Thank you. The survey is also available on our website if you didn't receive one in the mail.

Republic Bus Riders: It has long been the practice for students or parents to bring a note to the office so they can ride a different bus than “normal” to attend different social events or meet the needs of families. At this time we need to limit that activity. Our bus drivers are working hard to keep seating charts, keep physical distancing as much as possible, and follow all of the guidance we’ve been given. We do understand everyone’s situation is different. If a child has two different residences or sometimes goes to daycare after school and sometimes to their house we will certainly work with you to make that happen. What we cannot do right now is have your son/daughter ride a different bus just to go to a birthday party or go play at someone else’s house. Thank you for your understanding as we’re doing our best to have in-person learning happening in the Republic School District.
September 8, 2020 Dear Families: We have had a great start to the school year and want to thank you in advance for ensuring that students are healthy and well when they come to school. We are required to follow all Northeast Tri-County health guidelines and thank you in advance for keeping children home if they are sick. If you have any questions about our reopening plan or our health screenings at school, please contact me, Jeannette Bauer, School Nurse, or Kevin Young, Superintendent. Thank you again, we look forward to serving your children with an amazing school year! Most Sincerely, Carolann Gutierrez (Mrs. G)

August 6, 2020 Dear Republic School Families: My thoughts have been with all of you this summer, and I hope that you have had time to enjoy all of the wonderful summer events and traditions as much as possible. I have been busy with my husband moving into our own home, and I am so appreciative to have had the time to sort, organize and unpack. The Republic community has become home, and we are so grateful to be part of it. Although it has been an interesting summer with the events taking place around the world, one thing that we can count on is the upcoming school year. I know you are as anxious as I am to get our Reopening Plan out so that you can make decisions based on what is best for your children and your family. We have had our sixteen member “Re-opening Committee” meet three times, with more meetings next week, to discuss plans on reopening Republic Schools safely. We are charged with creating a plan which will meet all Washington State Health and Safety mandates/guidelines. Our plan will be finalized and posted on the district webpage and will be approved by our Republic School District Board at their meeting on August 19, 2020. Guidance and directives have had a major impact on the plans as we have had work within the scope of the weekly updates. We are confident however, that our final plan will meet the needs of students, and staff, while adhering to state and local guidance. To help jump start the school year, registration for high school students will take place next Monday through Wednesday, August 10-12, 2020. Students will visit the high school office where we will have ChromeBooks available for students to choose their electives for the year. Middle school students may call or email Mrs. Judy Hamrick at firstname.lastname@example.org or (509) 775-3171 with their 1st/2nd/3rd choices for the 1st period electives of Shop, Band, or Life Skills. Facial coverings and social distancing will be enforced. We look forward to seeing and hearing from our great Republic Tigers! We will keep you posted on our Reopening plan as soon as it has been completed, and we will be available to answer your questions as they come up. Thank you for your patience as we work through this planning stage together and please know, we miss our students and want them to be back in school in whatever format that may include. I am in the office Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00pm if you have any questions or need assistance, email@example.com or (509) 207-7376 or my cell phone (509) 740-7489. Thank you, I know we will get through this challenging time, stronger, wiser, and more connected than ever. Please keep in touch and I hope to see you all either “live” or virtually very soon. Please take great care. Most Sincerely, Carolann Gutierrez (Mrs. G)
Update on Reopening: Our committee has worked hard on a plan to get students back into the building while following all of the guidance from OSPI, L& I, and the Department of Health. While our plan is nearly completed, I am hearing there may be new metrics and guidance coming soon from the Governor, OSPI, and our local health department. We have prepared for on site in person learning to start on August 27. If that has to change we will communicate that as quickly as possible. We will continue to work towards having students on campus to the extent we're allowed.

Graduation 2020 It is official! Our senior class will be graduating on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 1:00 PM. The ceremony will consist of a “Drive-In” type of ceremony to be held in the school parking lot. Seniors will each have two cars filled with family members to witness the ceremony, and an FM system will be available. Unfortunately, we have to limit the event to immediate family only. We were charged with developing a plan for commencement which met all county and state health mandates. For the community however, we will have the entire ceremony recorded and available for viewing by the end of June. We will post the video on our district website for all to see. Senior Cruise/Gift Bins Community members are invited to come out and celebrate our seniors as they “cruise” down main street on Friday, June 12 at 6:00 pm. Senior Students will be in their uniquely decorated cars and “make the loop”. We hope you can come downtown and show our 18 senior students your support and congratulations on their graduation. We will have a Gift Bin for each senior at graduation. If you would like to drop off a card, gift, or words of encouragement to one of our super students, please write the name on the item and drop it off at the high school office between 8:00-3:00 Monday through Thursday. We will make sure they are placed in the appropriate bin.
