With the assistance of Ferry County Search and Rescue volunteers, Mr. Avila's 4th-grade class learned the fundamentals of wilderness survival. The skills taught included how to avoid getting lost, basic shelter building techniques, and what to do if you lack cell service, along with essential compass skills. After lunch by the warming fire, students were challenged to build their own shelter and start a fire using only a metal match and cotton balls coated with Vaseline. The ROAR program would like to thank Jim Beckwith, Sam Jenkins, and Bob Venters for generously volunteering their time and expertise. We would also like to give a special thanks to our parent volunteers: Starr Sullivan, Nick Sharbono, Sarah Guthrie, and Nikki Winters, for their support of the ROAR program and the students of Republic Schools.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Mrs. Sage's 3rd-grade class traveled to Hall Creek to learn basic survival skills from members of Ferry County Search and Rescue. The students received a survival kit made from everyday household items and were taught how to construct a basic lean-to shelter. After lunch, the students faced a challenge: to build a survival shelter and start a campfire using only a ferro rod, cotton balls coated with Vaseline, and some small kindling. The ROAR program would like to thank Ferry County Search and Rescue and all the parent volunteers who made the trip a success, despite the difficult weather.

This week, Mrs. Starr's and Miss Bushnell's classes visited Curlew Lake State Park for a day of exploration and learning about measurement. Second-grade students participated in games and explored the park while searching for natural items to measure, such as pine cones, sticks, and pine needles, using a meter and other nonstandard units of measurement. After their lesson on measurement, the students enjoyed an adventure walking along the trails in the state park.
